Thor: The Dark World’s villain, Malekith the Accursed, will be played by Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston. In a recent interview he reveals details about the film’s villain.

When discussing his first day at work on the film, Eccleston says, “It was when the Ark crashes into Asgard. I come off the ship, blow up the throne and then stride through to have my confrontation with Odin [Thor’s father].” He says that it was “a pretty good first day, destroying Asgard.”

Eccleston later made a joke about Malekith having a diary saying, “That’s what it says in Malekith The Accursed’s diary: ‘Tuesday. Destroyed Asgard.'” He told Empire that it would take six hours of makeup every day to get into his detailed prosthetics. We’re glad they aren’t just relying on VFX magic to make the film look great.

He explains the process of being put in the prosthetics “like washing your feet with your socks on,” and later said that the he enjoyed bringing the incredible design to the character and more importantly sharing sets with Anthony Hopkins.

Chris Eccleston also had positive things to say about the film’s director, saying he is “a magician with performance and with actors – For a film which is so beholden to the technicalities, that’s a magical thing to bring.”

Of course, Thor: The Dark World’s director is Alan Taylor, who directed some Game of Thrones episodes, so he’s bound to bring some incredible shots and realism to the sequel.

In terms of his character’s motive, he says, “There is a kind of tragic quality to his quest. Because he’s lost his wife, he’s lost his children. He’s lost everything.” This certainly sets up a great way for audiences to relate to the villain, similar to Loki in the previous film, but hate him for what he does.

Something interesting he discussed was “Aether.” Apparently, if Malekith gets a hold of this stuff, “he is omnipotent.” Aether is reportedly the material which fills the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere.

Eccleston also talked about his enjoyment doing stunts saying, “You know sliding up and down The Gherkin, being flown here and there, scrambling in mid-air, trying to get to each other’s throats.” Sounds like there will be some epic fighting going on in the Thor sequel.

It’s also revealed that Thor’s father, Odin, banished Malekith’s race 5,000 years ago and then “confined [them] to a vast vessel known as the Ark.” This is clearly the ship we see smash into London in the trailers.

We’re huge fans of Christopher Eccleston, and we think he’s going to be a massive hit as Malekith when Thor: The Dark World lands in theaters on November 8.
