The Saw reboot starring Chris Rock has moved up from its original Halloween 2020 premiere date to a summer 2020 release date.

It was recently announced that Lionsgate was bringing us a reboot of the Saw franchise starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Max Minghella. Initially, the film was set to release Halloween of 2020, but it has just been announced that the movie has been moved up five months to release in the summer of 2020.

According to Variety, after the studio saw some early footage from the film (currently in production in Toronto), the decision was made to move the release date up. It’s unclear what they saw in that footage that inspired the studio to push the movie’s release up, but it can’t be ignored that this date change came a few days after Universal announced the release date of Halloween Kills, coming Halloween 2020.

It’s likely the move doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the movie. Rather, Lionsgate is just setting the film up for as much success as possible by making sure it doesn’t have to compete with another major horror franchise’s release.

While a lot of us might have reboot fatigue, the Saw reboot came about thanks to Chris Rock’s love of the franchise. And sure, there are quite a few Saw movies out there (this flick will be the ninth film in the franchise), but because this movie came about because of Rock’s fandom for the series, and the fact that Saw II, III, and IV director Darren Lynn Bousman is returning, this movie might return the franchise to its roots.

For now, plot details are being kept under lock and key, but we’ve been promised that this new Saw movie will contain “deviously treacherous traps, clever clues and the edge-of-the-seat suspense that fans expect.” Rock will play a detective investigating a series of grisly murders (Jigsaw victims?), Minghella plays his partner, and Jackson plays his father.

The Saw franchise has always been a bit of a wild one, but we’re excited to see what this new reboot will bring us.
