Wonder Woman has found her love interest in Star Trek’s Chris Pine. The actor will play Steve Trevor in Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman movie.

Update (July 28): Nearly two months after the news first broke, we’re now learning that Pine has closed his deal to star in Wonder Woman. “Steve Trevor will be no mere love interest for Gadot’s Diana Prince, as there will be plenty of action to keep him busy, though plot details remain under wraps,” says The Wrap.

Pine could potentially have a new franchise on his hands if Wonder Woman proves to be a big hit for Warner Bros. His deal reportedly includes an option for sequels.

Original story (May 27): It looks like Gal Gadot will be joined by Chris Prine in the new Wonder Woman movie, as Variety reports that Pine will be playing the love interest in Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor.

The Star Trek actor was just in the hit movie Into the Woods, with a massively popular cast, and now it looks like he may be moving on to the superhero genre.

The character, Steve Trevor, is an intelligence officer in the U.S. army during WW II whose plane crashed on Paradise Island, which is the homeland of the Amazons, where Wonder Woman comes from.

He was then nursed back to health by the Amazon princess Diana, who ends up falling in love with him and follows him when he returns to Earth.

We’d love to see Pine in Wonder Woman, as he’s an excellent actor and should help bring his massive audience (Pine nuts) to the franchise which will tie into Justice League at some point. Pine will be in Star Trek 3, which is currently being written by Simon Pegg, but he should be free for Wonder Woman if he’s playing one of the starring roles.

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding this project, as it was the first female superhero solo film, which was also being directed by a female director. Michelle MacLaren left the project after creative differences, but Patty Jenkins signed on last month.

We think Chris Pine would be great in the first Wonder Woman film, and it’s exciting to think about him being involved in the Justice League franchise in the future.

Wonder Woman will hit theaters on June 23, 2017.
