As with many of the actors who helped build up the MCU, Chris Hemsworth confirmed his contract with Marvel is up after Avengers 4, and he may be done playing Thor.

Chris Hemsworth started playing the Asgardian god of thunder back in 2011. By the time Avengers 4 hits theaters, it will have been nearly a decade of playing the character. Not surprisingly, his contract ends after the fourth Avengers.

So does that mean Hemsworth is bidding adieu to Asgard and mjolnir for good? According to an interview with USA Today, it’s a real possibility.

“Contractually, right now — yeah, this is it. I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again. It’s sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it’s potentially finishing.”

Of course, Hemsworth’s statement doesn’t seem to reflect the actor’s personal interest in reprising the role or moving on. Other MCU actors have given similar statements about their contracts, so this isn’t a big shock. With Marvel positioning Infinity War and Avengers 4 as an MCU transition into Marvel Phase Four, it’s possible the actors are being intentionally coy about their futures with the franchise.

However, for Hemsworth to officially hang up mjolnir and step away from the role for good is a bit of a shock. Thor: Ragnorak was a huge Marvel hit, and sort of reinvented the character. It would be surprising for the actor to leave the role right as the character had new life breathed into it from Taika Waititi’s direction.

We will have to wait to see what happens to Thor in Infinity War and beyond. Hopefully we will get to see a bit more of Hemsworth as Thor in the future.
