Chris Evans recently sat down and explained why Captain America’s extended introduction scene was cut from The Avengers and what he’s doing to physically prepare for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Last week we saw a clip that will be included on The Avengers DVD/Blu-ray behind-the-scenes disc that hits stores September 25 in the U.S., which showed a long introduction clip of Steve Rodgers (Cap) that helped explain how poorly his character was dealing with being brought into a world he feels he doesn’t belong in (clip is no longer available online). We felt the scene would have added great depth to his character in The Avengers and it definitely seemed like a missed opportunity, but Evans believes that the scene was more suited “for Captain America 2” and director Joss Whedon told him “that’s a different story…that’s Cap’s story.” Chris went on to explain:

“I guess it’s nice that it came out that it shows a little bit richer character for Cap, but by the same token a lot of that stuff that’s for another movie. So, hopefully we can kind of still tell that story in a different way for ‘Cap 2.'”

When discussing Captain America‘s sequel, Chris said that while he wouldn’t start shooting until March, he would have to start physically training two months in advance to reach the body size of Cap. He joked, “these are not gym sessions buddy…I’m puking in these sessions.” We’re not surprised to hear he has to train insanely hard to get into shape for the film, as his presence was definitely impressive in the first Captain America film, as well as in The Avengers. Evans went on to say that the training is “a chore” and he doesn’t look forward to the sessions which are two hours long, every day.

“It’s two hours every day and it’s brutal man. I don’t do a lot of cardio because I’m not trying to lose weight, but gain weight. But, it’s big weights and you’re just [there] so long. You’ll be working out and you’ll be, ‘How long have I been here? Only 35 min? I still have another hour here.’ And you just leave the gym unable to move. You just know you have to do it tomorrow. It’s a chore.”

You can catch Chris Evans as Captain America in The Avengers DVD/Blu-ray, which hits stores September 25 and in his sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which will hit theaters April 4, 2014. Also revealed during this interview was an indie film Chris has been promoting during the Toronto International Film Festival called The Iceman, which is expected to hit a limited release before the end of 2012. The indie film is apparently a dark thriller where Evans plays a real-life psychotic assassin, Robert Pronge – he says it’s “just the opposite of what I had just come off of.”
