Chris Cooper has just signed on to play Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Norman Osborn has been one of the biggest question marks of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While he wasn’t actually seen in the first film, his company Oscorp and the character itself was talked about quite a bit. Variety broke the news earlier and THR confirmed that he was indeed playing Osborn. He’s also integral to the series as a whole due to becoming the Green Goblin, director Marc Webb’s reportedly favorite villain.

Willem Dafoe played Osborn/Green Golbin in the original Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi and despite his power ranger-like Golbin suit, he was incredible in the role. So far it’s not known as to whether Chris Cooper will turn into the Green Golbin in this film or the next, but knowing Marc Webb is such a fan of the Green Golbin, it’s hard to imagine we won’t see at least some signs of what’s to come in Osborn’s villainous future.

Cooper joins what has become an enormous cast of talent including Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones and Dane DeHaan, who will play Norman Osborn’s son Harry.

Recently confirmed in a press release was that the film will officially be called simply: The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Although it confirmed that Paul Giamatti and Colm Feore would join the sequel’s cast, the press release didn’t shed any light as to which characters they may be playing. We imagine Giamatti will be The Rhino as rumored, and while we thought Feore could possibly be a perfect fit for Norman Osborn, it looks like he may be headed to play fan favorite J. Jonah Jameson.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already in production, as we saw the first look at Spider-Man’s new suit and Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson on set just yesterday. The film will hit theaters May 2, 2014.
