Though the first part was an extraordinary beginning to Sabrina Spellman’s dark journey, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part two tapped deeper into the magic for an incredible next step in the universe and in Sabrina’s life.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, though with such a short history, has already proven itself to be a strong contender for TV’s best teen drama of the present day. While the first half of the first part was a little slow to start, though the pace picked up as the background of Greendale was created, the second half was marvellous, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part two was almost 100% better.

After viewing the full season, it’s clear that the writers were setting Sabrina’s story up in part one for the dramatic and dark departure in part two as Sabrina grappled with Satan’s compulsion and signing her name in the Book of the Beast, leading her down a much darker path than her mortal life previously allowed.

Sabrina’s path

Sabrina and Nick’s paths were directly connected on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part two, and Sabrina could not, and would not have, taken this dark path without the support of her boyfriend along the way. Whereas Harvey tied Sabrina to her mortal life, Nick allowed Sabrina to be free of that, for the first time, and to truly appreciate the other parts of herself that she received from her mother.

It’s fairly obvious that Sabrina and Harvey will end up together in the end, but this relationship has been quite impactful on Sabrina and it’s going to shape her for the rest of her life. Whether or not she is able to save Nick from hell (after he absorbed Lucifer into his “flesh prison” to save the world), she wouldn’t be the witch she is without him.

As wonderful and well-done as it was to see Sabrina slowly head down the path of night (and later tumble the rest of the way), leaving behind much of her mortal life to embrace her witch duties, I really missed the Sabrina from part one. The innocence of her character, despite what she was facing, felt like the true Sabrina Spellman that I’ve always been familiar with.

Anyway, that aside, this season really stepped it up. My biggest complaint from the first 10 episodes was that there was not nearly enough magic in the show, especially considering it was supposed to be introducing us to everyone in the coven and their abilities; however, these nine episodes truly showed what everyone was capable of, and unleashed magic unlike anything else on television.

I mean, who is going to get Sabrina’s appearance when taken over by Satan’s will (as the Herald of Hell to destroy the angels) out of their head any time soon? It was iconic. Plus, Sabrina burned them alive with hellfire, which, I mean, no one can really do anything to stop this Spellman witch, can they? I’m so excited to see how Sabrina’s power will grow when she’s already one of the most powerful witches of all.

The Evil Overlords

Damn, there was a lot to unpack with the entire story of the coven during these nine episodes. From Father Blackwood to the Dark Lord rising, it’s hard to imagine how any future episodes can top this selection that we’ve been given.

First, Father Blackwood is, honestly, the worst character on television right now. The man is so utterly disgusting with his clear plan to set the coven back into the dark ages with his “take” on a woman’s role and how any witch should be, basically, subservient to any warlock.

His marriage to Zelda was the lowlight of the season, and how her character development was completely destroyed in forcing the two together in unholy matrimony.

Lucifer rising from hell occurred faster than I originally thought it would on the series, which I still believe was too soon, but it was something to watch.

“Hot Satan” was definitely an intriguing character, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of him. His claim to be Sabrina’s father has not been explored nearly enough, whether it’s true or not, and he was just a very interesting addition to Greendale.

Madam Satan AKA Lilith finally getting her time on the throne? Count me in. She had put up with enough shit from Lucifer (and all men) and deserved her time to shine as the Queen of Hell without Lucifer there to overrule her.

Knowing Sabrina is going to fight to get into hell and save Nick warms my heart because then we’ll get to see more of Lilith. Ms. Wardwell is not an interesting enough character for Michelle Gomez’s talent. It would be a disaster if she were no longer playing Lilith, which I believed to be true when she walked through the gates of hell.

The Spellmans

Our sarcastic queen was turned into a housewife standing in the shadow of her husband, and her actions continuously went against her family, which isn’t what any of us wanted to see from Zelda.

Zelda’s redeeming trait is her love for Sabrina, Ambrose, and especially Hilda, all of whom she would normally sacrifice her life to save. In many of these episodes, Father Blackwood came first to her, which I believe was entirely out-of-character.

I mean, they literally had to have Blackwood put Zelda under a control spell before she saw the disturbing nature of her marriage… anyway, let’s keep Zelda single in the future and keep her fighting for her family. (Also, Zelda being the High Priestess, hopefully, in part three is going to be phenomenal to watch!)

Hilda, on the other hand, continuously proves herself a contender for best character on the series. Hilda’s innocent facade is only strengthened by the underlying power she holds, particularly when it involves her loved ones.

Sabrina, Zelda, and Ambrose don’t appreciate Hilda nearly enough for just how much she loves them. Let’s see her get that appreciation on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part three, yeah?

Ambrose went on one wild ride during these nine episodes. Appointed a position at the academy, framed for killing the Anti-Pope, locked in a cell, almost murdered by angels after escaping his cell, and joining Prudence on her mission to track down Father Blackwood… what didn’t he do?

Aside from Sabrina, Ambrose is definitely the other person who plays a key role in everything in Greendale. His advice to Sabrina often leads her to a decision, or they come to a decision together and take action (like removing her magic, which, in turn, started the apocalypse).

In part three, I’m desperately hoping for a flashback episode to Ambrose’s youth and how his life has led him to the path he is currently on. I could see Father Blackwood playing a role in Ambrose’s house arrest, even though it hasn’t been directly mentioned, but it would play into his hunt for the disgraced warlock.

When is ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ part 3 airing?

Though we have no premiere date for part three, it seems likely that Netflix will continue on their current schedule and have the 10-episode season air in October, right around Halloween.

Going to hell sounds fun, but I’m most excited to see Sabrina and her human friends team up and explore the magical world together. Roz, Theo, and Harvey have the potential to be very interesting characters; Roz has her cunning, which is underused and could make her an asset to the show, while Theo has the ability to see his ancestor’s spirit and that has to be some sort of mystical power, correct?

(An unpopular opinion, but without Nick, Harvey and Sabrina can finally get back together like it’s obvious they are destined to be.)
