Children Of Blood And Bone, Tomi Adeyemi’s best-selling YA fantasy novel, is on its way to being the first Lucasfilm project that isn’t Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

If you haven’t read Tomi Adeyemi’s fantastic YA fantasy debut Children Of Blood And Bone, do yourself a favor a read it now — because it’s likely to become the next big on-screen fantasy hit.

When Children of Blood and Bone debuted in 2018, it was the year’s most anticipated YA fantasy novel and one of the year’s biggest releases. It had already made headlines in the publishing world for being subject to an intense bidding war, one in which Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group eventually acquired the book for a reported seven figures.

At the same time, Fox 2000 purchased the film rights to the book directly, a move which spoke to their confidence in the property. The film went into active development, with the producers of both the Twilight and The Maze Runner franchises at the head of it.

However, when Fox was acquired by Disney, and Disney brutally cutback many of the studio’s projects, there were questions as to whether the adaptation would be going forward.

Fortunately, Deadline reported earlier today that the best-selling novel by Nigerian-American author Tomi Adeyemi “caught the fancy of Lucasfilm and that its chief Kathy Kennedy is in the process of making this the first feature property to be produced by Lucasfilm since the Disney acquisition that isn’t Star Wars or Indiana Jones.”

Which means the project looks to be continuing on under the Disney banner, now with the force and legacy of Lucasfilm likely behind it.

Children of Blood and Bone — which has been described as “A Black Lives Matter–inspired fantasy novel” — centers on teen Zélie Adebola, a native of the fictional land called Orïsha. Orïsha was once a land filled with magic and practitioners of magic called maji, until a ruthless tyrant king rose up, killed all the maji and stripped the land of its magic. The novel follows Zélie as she embarks on a journey to bring back magic and strike out against the monarchy.

Rick Famuyiwa, known for his work on Dope and The Chi, remains attached to direct the epic fantasy, with This is Us writer Kay Oyegun in talks to write a brand new script adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone.
