More information concerning Charlie Hunnam’s Fifty Shades of Grey departure has come to light since he stepped off the project Saturday.

Hunnam, who signed on to the role of Christian Grey in September, was feeling stressed about his ability to get into the mental space of the lead character during his time off from filming Sons of Anarchy. One problem with the limited amount of time was that the current version of the script hasn’t developed Christian Grey, and Hunnam didn’t feel he had what he needed to understand the character, Hypable has learned from a source close to the project.

In addition, the actor was concerned how his body looks compared to what is described in the book series by E.L. James. To meet the character description required of him, Hunnam thought he would have to go to the gym every day between Sons and Fifty Shades filming.

Hunnam was adamant about being loyal to the story and pleasing readers. In an interview earlier this month he said he was taking the role “very seriously,” adding, “I intend to explore the nature of who this character is, what motivates him.”

This new information lines up with Universal’s decision this past Friday to add a new screenwriter to work on the script originally penned by Kelly Marcel. Patrick Marber was hired by the studio to develop the characters and “polish” the script. Better character development may help interest well-known actors like Alexander Skarsgard, Theo James, and Jamie Dornan, who the studio is reportedly considering.

Fifty Shades of Grey has a release date of August 1, 2014. Producers are hoping to find their new Christian Grey in time for the planned November production start date, otherwise they may have to push their release date. The film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and stars Dakota Johnson in the role of Anastasia Steele.
