X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner has confirmed that Channing Tatum will play Gambit in future X-Men movies.

While speaking with Total Film, Donner revealed that “Tatum is it” concerning Gambit and said: “Well, he’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action, we all know that. And he has a really good heart, because I know him personally. I did a movie with him. So I think he’ll be great for Gambit. He’s a Southerner too. He’s not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner and understands that world. And you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”

In a recent interview with MTV, Tatum spoke about his future projects and while Magic Mike 2 was the main focus, he went on to discuss the fact that he had met with Lauren Shuler Donner about potentially playing Gambit in a future X-Men film.

Channing was extremely excited about potentially playing the mutant from down south. Tatum says, “I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. I would love—Gambit’s my really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I [mean] I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south — my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida — I don’t know I just related to him.”

The 22 Jump Street star says that he hopes that Gambit could join the ranks of other X-Men or even possibly making a solo film with the character if Fox was willing. Tatum says, “I hope it does come together. You never know, it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would play it. I’m already working on the accent.”

Looks like his dreams will come true, as Donner is essentially the end all in terms of producers for the X-men films.

Tatum has been moving up the ranks lately and was recently awarded MTV’s trailblazer award. He’ll be appearing in the highly anticipated sequel 22 Jump Street with his good friend Jonah Hill who presented the award to him, as well as in Jupiter Ascending alongside actress Mila Kunis.

We’d love to see Gambit be included in the X-Men franchise, which has been revitalized by the success of X-Men: First Class, and its sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. Channing Tatum has proven that he’s talented (and hilarious) and we think he’d be great in the role of the New Orleans-based mutant.

Channing Tatum can next be seen in the comedy sequel 22 Jump Street alongside Jonah Hill on June 13, and he also has the sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending landing in theaters shortly after in July.
