We might know Chadwick Boseman best for kicking ass as Wakandan king T’Challa, but he’s about to delve into the world of the samurai.

Chadwick Boseman is set to play the lead in a new film called Yasuke. The movie chronicles a man, Yasuke, from Portuguese Mozambique who is brought to Japan as a slave for Jesuit missionaries but ends up being the first African man to earn the title of samurai.

As Deadline reports, when Yasuke comes to Japan, he becomes interested in a warlord named Nobunaga who is trying to unite the country under his leadership. Yasuke and Nobunaga form a complicated friendship that ultimately leads Yasuke down the path to becoming a samurai.

It’s an amazing true story and one that many people are completely unaware of. Earning the title of samurai is a really huge deal, and Yasuke’s journey is one that will most certainly be utterly amazing to watch onscreen. And with Chadwick Boseman playing the title role, you just know this is going to be a truly awesome movie.

Boseman explained his excitement over the role to Deadline, saying, “The legend of Yasuke is one of history’s best-kept secrets, the only person of non-Asian origin to become a Samurai. That’s not just an action movie, that’s a cultural event, an exchange, and I am excited to be part of it.”

The script was written by Narcos co-creator Doug Miro and will be produced by Erik Feig. Outside of Boseman’s casting announcement, we don’t yet know who will round out the rest of the cast, nor do we have a release date for this movie.

However, we can’t wait to see this fascinating story from history brought to life on the big screen. And after what we’ve seen from his work in roles like T’Challa/Black Panther and famous baseball player Jackie Robinson in 42, we know Chadwick Boseman has absolutely got the acting chops to make Yasuke come to life in an amazing and engaging fashion.
