As tons of television shows find out their fate this week, CBS is reportedly close to picking up How I Met Your Dad for next season.

This is unsurprising news, as co-creators of HIMYD Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have a winning record with their nine-season run of How I Met Your Mother, which just concluded in March. We’re sure CBS is happy to see them – along with a third co-creator of How I Met Your Dad, Emily Spivey, and the strong cast – nearly back on the fall schedule.

News about the show continues to trickle out, as it was only a few weeks ago that we heard word Meg Ryan will narrate the show as an older version of Sally, much like Bob Saget lent his voice to an older version of Ted for nearly a decade.

Sally, played by Greta Gerwig, is described as “vibrant, messy and unpredictable — a ‘female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life.’” Drew Tarver, Tiya Sircar, Andrew Santino, and Nicholas D’Agosto round out the cast and will play Todd, Juliet, Danny and Frank, respectively. To read more about the characters, check out their descriptions here.

How I Met Your Dad is billed as – beyond the obvious – Sally’s consideration and eventual divorce from Gavin, her husband of one year. According to the IMDb page for the show, Anders Holms will helm the role of Gavin, but we are not sure if he will be a series regular, recurring character, or only appear in the series premiere.

It will be interesting to see if HIMYD can serve as a suitable replacement for How I Met Your Mother this fall. Who knows – maybe in nine years we will be looking back on this time and wondering how we ever lived without the character of Sally and her friends.

We’ll be sure to let you know when the news is made official.
