CBS has the broadcast rights to the Super Bowl and therefore has a huge advantage to plug and push any show in its line-up. This year Elementary is the show it has selected.

Since Elementary is one of the few new TV series to be producing solid numbers, giving it Super Bowl hype is an interesting choice. It routinely ranks high on the TV Guide and TV by the Numbers lists. As recently as last week TV by the Numbers stated, “After two new episodes in 2013, Elementary’s relative ratings have picked up to the point where it’s now certain to be renewed. If its ratings plunge later in the season, the prediction will be adjusted, but expect to see it on CBS’ schedule next season.”

Last year NBC introduced The Voice after the Super Bowl. This move was widely credited for helping the series define itself in the reality TV niche as something different than America’s Got Talent, X-Factor or American Idol.

In the recent past, CBS has usually chosen to plug reality TV when it has had the Super Bowl featuring 60 Minutes, Survivor (twice), and Undercover Boss. On the other hand, it did feature Criminal Minds back in 2007 in the show’s second year, and the show took a ratings boost and it remains solid in the ratings today.

Are you new to Elementary? Will you give it a try after the Super Bowl, or get others to watch?
