DC’s Birds of Prey has officially found its director in Cathy Yan!

According to Deadline, director Cathy Yan has officially signed on to helm the upcoming DC spinoff movie Birds of Prey, which will find actress Margot Robbie returning to reprise her role as Harley Quinn.

Yan’s involvement in the project marks a huge milestone for the superhero movie genre.

For starters, the former Wall Street Journal Reporter is only the second female filmmaker to serve as director on a DC entity, following the footsteps of Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins. She’ll also be the first Asian woman to direct a DC film.

The director, who made her debut with Dead Pigs at Sundance, will be working off of a script written by Batgirl scribe Christina Hodson.

Though Robbie has already signed on to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming movie, there’s no word yet on who else will share the silver screen alongside her.

In the DC comics, Birds of Prey centers around a group of badass women comprised of Quinn, Black Canary, Batgirl, Huntress, and more.

We’ll be looking forward to seeing who else makes an appearance alongside Harley Quinn in the film. That being said, given that the upcoming DC entity centers on a female cast, it sounds like the studio is already off to a great start by hiring Yan and Hodson to bring the comic to life.

Currently there’s no release date for Birds of Prey, but the film is expected to start production in late 2018 or early 2019.
