Cate Blanchett is joining the MCU, playing a mystery role in Thor: Ragnarok. We might know what it is.

Thor: Ragnarok, recently described by Mark Ruffalo as a Hulk and Thor dudebro road trip comedy, will feature Oscar nominee Cate Blanchett in a major role.

The third Thor flick tells the story of “Ragnarok,” the Norse Mythology’s apocalypse. Therefore, it seems likely that Geek.com‘s alleged reveal about Blanchett’s character’s identity is accurate.

The site claims that Blanchett is playing Hela, a villain from the Thor comics lifted out of Norse Mythology.

Hela, or Hel, is somewhat comparable to Hades in Greek Mythology: She is the ruler of an eponymous underworld, which holds a portion of the dead. Thor already had a vision of this underworld in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but this new report suggests that Hela will in fact be Ragnarok‘s main villain.

Blanchett’s Hela will appear “complete with her cloak and power over the dead souls of the Nine Realms.”

When Hela arrives in Asgard, she will meet up with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, no doubt for nefarious reasons.

Thor: Ragnarok will be directed by Flight of the Conchords‘ Taika Waititi, and is set to be released on November 3, 2017.

This summer, we’re set for Captain America: Civil War, the epic showdown between Iron Man and Captain America. Neither Thor nor Hulk take part in this kerfuffle, but we suppose they’re too busy stocking up supplies for their buddy-cop comedy.
