Lionsgate is reportedly in talks with Cate Blanchett to star as Lilith in their upcoming movie adaptation of the popular Borderlands video game.

According to Variety, who first reported the news, Eli Roth is set to direct the Borderlands adaptation, with Avi and Ari Arad producing through Arad Prods along with Erik Feig, who is also producing via his Picturestart banner.

Craig Mazin, who won an Emmy for writing Chernobyl, and has currently been tapped to write TV series adaptation of fellow video game The Last of Us, has written the latest screenplay draft.

Blanchett’s character Lilith is one of the main protagonists in the franchise, and is one of the playable characters in the first Borderlands game. She is one of only six women in the galaxy that belong to the powerful “siren” class, wielding incredible, superhuman powers.

Set in the distant future, Borderlands centers on four “Vault Hunters” who travel to the planet Pandora to hunt down an alien vault which is rumored to contain advanced alien technology. In their pursuit of the vault, the hunters must battle local wildlife and bandits, with the ultimate goal of stopping the head of a private corporate army from reaching the vault first.

Eli Roth has expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition.”

Though sources close to the project reported the news of the Oscar-winning Blanchett being tapped to lead the Borderlands film, Lionsgate has yet to confirm that or any casting news for the upcoming film adaptation.
