The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s weekend box office numbers are in, and the film has set a new record for November in the United States.

The film made $161 million domestically which makes it the month’s largest opening in history. The previous record holder was The Twilight Saga: New Moon with $142 million.

Catching Fire did not nab the title of biggest opening of 2013. That award still belongs to Iron Man 3 which opened the summer season with a $174 million pull.

Overseas, The Hunger Games sequel starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth made $146 million for a worldwide weekend total of $307 million.

The original film which opened in March 2012 made $152 million during its opening weekend, so this is a big win for the franchise and its future.

It’s important to note that Catching Fire was not available in 3D which could’ve easily boosted the film’s box office performance thanks to higher ticket costs. Iron Man 3 was in 3D.

Elsewhere at the weekend box office, Thor: The Dark World added another $14 million to its total, The Best Man Holiday made $12.5 million, and Delivery Man made $8 million.

Now fans of The Hunger Games are looking forward to the future. Mockingjay, Part 1 and Mockingjay, Part 2 are due out in November 2014 and November 2015 respectively. The films are shooting back-to-back and production is currently on hiatus as the cast and crew promote Catching Fire around the world.
