The Hunger Games: Catching Fire continues to hold steam at the box office as we head into 2014.

As of yesterday, the movie hit $400 million at the United States box office and $800 million worldwide.

It hit those new numbers in 40 days. Domestically, it is the fifth fastest film to hit $400 million. By comparison, it took The Hunger Games 80 days to hit the same number.

The Francis Lawrence-directed movie is now in line to surpass The Hunger Games‘ $408 million and Iron Man 3’s $409 million, which will make Catching Fire the thirteenth highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. It originally opened in theaters on November 22.

Thanks to Nikki Finke and Ray Subers on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2 are currently filming back-to-back in Atlanta, Georgia. The first film will hit theaters November 2014 and the second will arrive November 2015.

We’re hoping to see a Mockingjay trailer in late March (with Divegent?) or early April. The first trailer for Catching Fire arrived in mid April, so we assume Mockingjay, Part 1 will be on roughly the same schedule.
