Our first significant look at the book-to-television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy debuted today.

The BBC released the first photos from The Casual Vacancy miniseries on Thursday. They depict several of the lead characters, including Howard Mollison played by Michael Gambon (above).

Other photos include our first looks at Abigail Lawrie as Krystal Weedson:

Julia McKenzie and Keeley Hawes as Shirley and Samantha Mollison:

Hawes again as Samantha:

Sonny Serkis as Paul Price and Joe Hurst as Andrew ‘Arf’ Price:

And another photo of Gambon as Howard:

The Casual Vacancy three-part miniseries airs on HBO and BBC in early 2015 (a specific date has yet to be announced). Rowling’s book was adapted for television by Sarah Phelps and is directed by Jonny Campbell.

Will you be tuning into ‘The Casual Vacancy’ miniseries?

I didn’t finish the book because I was honestly bored (hence the brevity of this article), so I figure the miniseries will be a great way of finally consuming Rowling’s first post-Potter novel.

“I always felt that, if it were to be adapted, this novel was best suited to television,” Rowling said in a statement two years ago. “I think the BBC is the perfect home.”

The Casual Vacancy was first published in 2012.
