The screenwriter of the upcoming BBC mini-series based on J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy has been revealed.

The BBC reports in an article that writer Sarah Phelps will be in charge of adapting Rowling’s first adult novel for television.

This information was almost hidden in an article by the BBC that announced their plan for an upcoming Agatha Christie series:

“Acclaimed writer Sarah Phelps (Great Expectations, The Crimson Field, The Casual Vacancy) will adapt a new telling of this extraordinary and ingenious masterpiece, produced by Mammoth Screen.”

Although this is not an official confirmation, it is highly likely since the article in question was published by BBC, who is in charge of bringing The Casual Vacancy to television.

Her profile on her agent’s website also lists The Casual Vacancy, further confirming her involvement.

The mini-series was announced in December 2012 and is reportedly premiering this year. “I always felt that, if it were to be adapted, this novel was best suited to television,” Rowling said in a statement during the initial announcement. “I think the BBC is the perfect home.”

The Harry Potter author published The Cuckoo’s Calling after Vacancy. Her next book is a sequel to Cuckoo’s Calling titled The Silkworm. The detective series follows Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin.
