After a very Ryan-centric episode, we found out that Kate was taking the Captains’ exam to see how she would do. Is this the beginning of the end of Castle?
A lot of the focus of this season of Castle has been on Castle and Kate’s future. Recently Kate has been re-evaluating her professional career thanks to an encounter with Inspector Zhang who seemingly had it all. But it turned out that her personal life paid the price for being at the top of her field professionally. Kate ended that episode by writing down her goals, we just don’t know what they are yet.
If Kate does do well on her exam, what will this mean for the show? We already have a captain in Gates, would she move? While Gates isn’t our favorite boss, we have grown used to her and her ways. We still desperately miss dearly departed Captain Montgomery. If Kate did pass the exam and move forward, she probably wouldn’t be able to work with Castle anymore and they just got back together.
Say Kate does get the promotion to captain. Castle would be out his partner, so would he go pair up with Esposito and Ryan? That change would make them the lead detectives, something that they do deserve. That would make it harder on Ryan who is working side jobs to make sure his family is well-off and potentially put him in more danger than he currently is. Esposito has been second detective for a while now and who knows how his regime would look compared to Kate’s. It would also be interesting to see Castle working with them full-time, with Espo in charge.
That kind of a change would drastically change the scope of the show, if the show decided to go on. Currently the show is not picked up for an eighth season, which does not usually happen until April or early May by ABC. The cast is in a negotiation year as it is. While no one has said they want the show to end, who knows what will happen when the deals are being made. Odds are that the show will get an eighth season and that it would be the last.
Professionally Kate did make some moves in recent seasons, with her job in D.C. with the FBI. She choose to come back to New York because she didn’t like how that particular game was played. Will being a captain change that as well? Personally Kate has dropped hints about starting a family but nothing concrete has been discussed. After seeing what putting the job first did to Inspector Zhang’s personal life, it looked like she had a change of heart. Our hope is that by the end of season seven we will have a clearer picture for what the future holds for Kate.
