Castle has had its fair share of villains but Rick’s personal nemesis, Jerry Tyson, is coming back and it’s time for a refresher on their twisted rivalry.

Jerry Tyson was, and still is to this day, Castle’s personal nemesis, much like Kate had her mother’s murderer and Senator Bracken. Rick hasn’t dealt with a villain with a more personal bent to get revenge against him. This week’s upcoming episode has two main purposes: bringing back Jerry Tyson, aka the 3XK killer, and his crazy murderess girlfriend Kelly Nieman to New York. Which in turn brings Richard Castle back to the 12th precinct, something any fan has to have been looking forward to.

The first appearance of Tyson is during the sixth episode of season 3, “3XK”, where the killer’s signature style returns after being dormant for four years. The serial killer murders three blonde women in a week, leaving them lying in a peaceful resting state. Being the crazy psychopath that he is, Tyson uses his cellmate, Marcus Gates, to get the suspicion off of him. How? He said that if Marcus continued his work and took the fall for the murders, even the ones he didn’t commit, Tyson would pay for Marcus’ brother Paul’s expensive surgery needed for his heart and he accepted.

Castle found holes in the cases but it all unraveled when he and Ryan took Jerry to a safe house. There they told him that Marcus wasn’t successful in his attempt to kill his girlfriend and his general lack of giving a damn tipped Castle off to the truth. Unfortunately, he got the upper hand, knocking Ryan out and tying up Castle. He let them live but told Castle that any deaths beyond this would be his fault.

Since that fateful night, the 3XK killer has resurfaced three times, until his fourth on Monday. In season 4, the gun that he stole off of Ryan was used in a murder by an enemy of Tyson’s from prison. The actual return of Tyson occurs in season 5 in “Probable Cause,” when he plans and almost successfully frames Rick for a murder. It went so far as to get Castle sent to prison where he planned on having him killed. Luckily Castle escaped from custody and met up with Kate at the library where she first arrested him back in the pilot.

Castle and Beckett are then attacked by Tyson on a bridge where he takes Kate hostage, leaving Castle to shoot him multiple times, before he falls off the edge into the water below. Police don’t find a body but Rick knows that this is exactly what he wanted: for them to think he is dead so he can start over like he always wanted to. In season 6, “Disciple”, a case where the victim’s identity has been changed to look like the team, Lanie and Esposito, leads Beckett and Co. to a plastic surgeon, Dr. Nieman, who turns out to be Tyson’s girlfriend.

While Castle and Beckett go back through old case files to try and find something they might have missed, they realize that the fake Esposito took all the files out and the fake Lanie destroyed the evidence. They race to pick up Nieman but her office has been cleared out. The episode ends with an embedded message playing “We’ll Meet Again”, sending chills down Castle, Kate, and our spines.
