Last night’s Castle had a surprise twist that no one could have seen coming on its mid-season 7 finale. Let’s dive in!

It’s Castle’s favorite time of the year, Christmas! He tasks Kate to come up with a poem that rhymes, as part of his family’s holiday tradition. I’m not really sure why she didn’t do this last year but we can skip that detail. Meanwhile, Lanie has some ‘splainin to do. She couldn’t tell her parents that her and Javi were on and off again all the time, so she accidentally let it slip that they were engaged. Whoops! That’s a pretty big lie to have but it might actually get us somewhere by the end of the episode!

Our murder victim, who was supposedly killed by Santa, turns out to be a mob doctor. Castle ends up knowing one of the mob bosses, Dino, from his Derek Storm research days. This takes Kate and Rick to a strip club and while he clearly knows the victim he doesn’t offer any help. But second in command’s car is the one that was used to chase the doctor down.

Dino ends up calling Castle down to the strip club, by himself, and tells Castle that Eric was family. He tasks Castle with proving that his second, Christopher, didn’t kill Eric and that in return he will get access that no cop has ever had before; he also makes Castle take a blood oath (!!!!) and tells him he’s family. Uh oh!

Lanie brings her parents to the precinct and it’s AWKWARD. The parents want to hear how Esposito proposed and as they both sputter, Ryan steps in and helps them out. At least until they have to go to dinner. Esposito decides to man up and be the best fake fiancé, in case he one day actually does propose.

Castle, investigating on the down low, goes to talk to Christopher in jail and it leads him to a lady who gave him a hot credit card but they were never used. They end up finding a backpack that Eric ditched, and inside are bloody clothes with bullet holes. Dino’s daughter, it turns out,9 might be the murderer and Castle is in danger when Jane interrupts. She was in the love with the guy Eric tried to save, and so she called Eric to try and have him save him.

And Luca, Jane’s rival boss love, is alive! That I did not see coming! Eric was helping them escape the mob life and was a casualty. Both guys were shot by a new party, and in a not so surprising twist, the cop who runs the mob beat turns out to be our killer. Isn’t that always the case? They need a mob war to do anything so they start it themselves.

Rick gets a visit from Dino and he is told he owes him a favor. Phew! Esposito enjoyed being fake engaged but they both realize that they aren’t a forever couple. Awwww. That is sad. But maybe that means Tori has a shot now!?

WHOA! In a surprising twist, the mob cop is murdered during his transfer and word got back to the DA that Castle was in cahoots with the mob family and he is no longer allowed to work the NYPD anymore!! Kate comes up and reads her perfect poem and he doesn’t tell her what just happened.

Castle is off until January and when it comes back, Rick is now a Private Dick!
