Another classic cartoon series is being brought back to life for a new generation, this time the ThunderCats are coming back in Cartoon Network’s new show ThunderCats Roar.
Netflix announced they will be bringing back the cartoon classic She-Ra, and it seems the nostalgic cartoon fun isn’t over with Cartoon Network’s announcing the return of the ThunderCats in ThunderCats Roar. But for those who might have grown up watching the original series (or fans of the 2011 reboot), you might notice that Lion-O and the gang look a bit different.

ThunderCats Roar has taken a decidedly different route than previous iterations of the classic cartoon series, opting for more kid-friendly animation styles (think Teen Titans Go!) and infusing a great deal of humor into the show. The poster has been released online, and you can get a quick glimpse at Lion-O, Tygra, Cheetara, and the rest of our friends from Thundera.

Still, despite ThunderCats Roar‘s new look and the decision to make the show funnier than the original, the basic story of the show stays true to the plot of the original ThunderCats series. Entertainment Weekly gave us a peek into the show’s official synopsis:
“Staying true to the premise of the original series, Lion-O and the ThunderCats — Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, Wilykat, and Wilykit — barely escape the sudden destruction of their home world, Thundera, only to crash land on the mysterious and exotic planet of Third Earth. Lion-O, the newly appointed Lord of the ThunderCats, attempts to lead the team as they make this planet their new home. A bizarre host of creatures and villains stand in their way, including the evil Mumm-Ra, Third Earth’s wicked ruler who will let nothing, including the ThunderCats, stop his tyrannical reign over the planet.”
The team behind this show are legitimate fans of the original series, who are obviously excited about a creative way to bring the story to a new generation of kids. While some adult ThunderCat fans have bemoaned this new take as a “childhood-ruiner,” it’s clear that the team behind ThunderCats Roar is making this new show out of love for the original. Plus, what is better than watching a new generation of kids get excited about the characters you were excited about when you were a kid?
