The Cars franchise continues to roll down the highway. A new short film with the lead cast members was announced this morning titled, The Radiator Springs 500 1/2.

The short film will kick off a new line of Cars shorts from Pixar. Springs 500 1/2 will be released through Disney Movies Anywhere, the studio’s new online streaming service for their films. According to Entertainment Weekly, the story follows the vehicles as they’re “enjoying a Founders Day celebration to honor the late Stanley.” Trouble erupts “when a gang of Baja racers descend on the town and challenge Lightning to a race.”

The Radiator Springs 500 1/2 was directed by Rob Gibbs and Scott Morse. The former spoke about the theme of the project with EW. “We kind of played it up like a western. These off-road racers come to town, like gunslingers looking for the hottest gunslinger in Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen. They challenge him to a race, like someone would challenge someone to a duel.”

The story was inspired by Mexico’s Baja 1000 race where there are different vehicles classes that compete. For this film they selected four types: “a Baja Bug, a Class-1 dune buggy, a Meyers Manx dune buggy, and a trophy truck, the big money ones, you know, with huge suspension and huge wheels,” says Gibbs.

The last feature length Cars film was Cars 2 in June 2011. Last October, one of the franchise’s voice actors said that Pixar is working on Cars 3.

The animated vehicle franchise isn’t Pixar’s first to see a series of short films. The studio has released several Toy Story shorts over the past few years.

Thanks, EW.
