Disney and Pixar have dropped the first Cars 3 trailer, offering our very first look at the threequel.

Cars 3 will be released in Summer 2017, but very little has been known about the plot. Until now! The first trailer reveals that Lightning McQueen will be getting in a serious accident during a race. “From this moment, everything will change,” Pixar ominously warns.

Cars 3 trailer makes the movie look look pretty… adult. It doesn’t look like a kids movie. But this is Pixar, and this movie only exists because kids are obsessed with the franchise, so we’re sure it’ll be more family friendly than it initially looks.

‘Cars 3’ official synopsis

The first Cars 3 synopsis also reveals the film’s plot for the first time: “Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!”

So why does this Cars 3 trailer make the movie look like it’s geared toward adults more than kids? Perhaps the idea was to only reach out to the people who will be paying for the tickets. There’s been a lot of resistance to a third Cars movie, partly because the second one was not well-received. This preview could help give parents a push.

Based on the preview and synopsis, it looks like Lightning’s racing injury will lead him to consider his purpose. The story looks like it has some heart, so you can count this writer intrigued. Sorry, it’s true. Deal with it.

Cars 3 arrives June 16, 2017. What do you think of the trailer?
