Lucasfilm, the studio behind Star Wars, has issued a statement regarding their plans for Carrie Fisher’s Leia in Episode 8 and beyond.

Recent reports have suggested Lucasfilm is tossing around the idea of digitally recreating the actress in order to continue using Leia in Episode 8 or Episode 9 (though the former has already completed filming).

Lucasfilm now says there are no plans to recreate her using special effects. “We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa,” the studio said on StarWars.com.

“Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.”

Releasing a statement like this seems to imply that these plans to not digitally recreate her won’t change. If so, then the question is, how will they write out the character of Leia, who reportedly has important roles in the next two Star Wars movies?

In Star Wars: Episode 8, due out at the end of this year, Leia reportedly has at least two key scenes. The same report says she has an even bigger role in Episode 9.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Fisher died at the end of December following heart failure.
