Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara experience falling in love during the 1950s in the first trailer for Carol.

Carol, directed by Todd Haynes, has been getting some amazing reviews and Oscar buzz after it hit Cannes Film Festival back in May, where Rooney Mara received a best actress award for her performance. Watch the film’s first trailer below:

The film is set in the 1950s, where Cate Blanchett’s character (Carol) is in an unhappy marriage with Friday Night Lights’ actor Kyle Chandler. Rooney Mara (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) plays a department store clerk, and on a chance meeting the two women find love.

The Carol trailer has some beautiful music playing over what is a fairly quiet and peaceful trailer, showing a string of emotions between a lesbian couple who are stuck in the impossible situation of attempting to be together in the extremely conservative 1950s.

Blanchett has been doing some of her best work in the last few years, with an amazing performance in Blue Jasmine winning her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2013.

Rooney Mara has also been doing some great work lately, with her standout role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and more recently in Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects. She’ll also be appearing in the upcoming Peter Pan remake, Pan, alongside Hugh Jackman.

Screenwriter Phyllis Nagy penned the book-to-film adaptation, which is based on author Patricia Highsmith’s novel titled The Price of Salt.

Carol will be hitting some festivals in the coming months, with its U.S. release date set for November 20.
