Captain Planet. He’s our hero. And soon to be a movie star.

Sony is acquiring the Captain Planet and the Planeteers movie rights based on the popular Cartoon Network and TBS animated environmentalist television show we all fell in love with during the ’90s.

Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford will serve as producers (they made a deal with Cartoon Network for Captain Planet two years ago after a failed attempt at a live action TV show).

Murphy and Montford are currently serving as producers on The Vampire Academy, the book to film series that is currently shooting its first movie in England.

With a studio now secured, the producers can begin seeking a screenwriter, director, and cast. The Captain Planet movie will be able to secure a lot of nostalgia points with the 20-somethings who are always eager for a new movie connecting back to their younger years.

Captain Planet is in a good position because the story line can grow up with its audience, which is now 10 – 20 years older than they were when they watched the show on television. We can imagine a Captain Planet movie that’s more tailored for a young adult audience and reflects today’s current climate change struggles.

What would be even greater is if some of the voice actors came back to reprise their roles in a live-action form. For example, LeVar Burton could come back to star as Planeteer member Kwame (Earth!).

Captain Planet’s movie release date hasn’t been set yet. In fact, it’s still probably very far from release.
