Room star Brie Larson is being seriously considered for the role of Captain Marvel in what will be Marvel’s first solo female-led movie.

Variety reports that Brie, who’s 26 years old, is the current frontrunner to play Captain Marvel a.k.a. Carol Danvers. “Sources tell Variety Marvel is in early talks with Larson to play Captain Marvel in the studio’s standalone project,” their report states. “It is unknown where things stand in negotiations but sources have told Variety she is the choice and Larson is leaning towards playing the part.”

While there’s no director attached to Captain Marvel, Variety’s report indicates that Marvel may first introduce the character in an MCU film prior to Captain Marvel’s bow in March 2019 (like how Spider-Man and Black Panther were introduced in Captain America: Civil War before their standalone movies hit theaters in 2017 and 2018 respectively).

One potential spot for an introduction could be in Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 which opens in 2018. The Russo Brothers, who are helming the film, let slip last month that she may appear in the Avengers threequel. There are a few other Marvel movies hitting theaters before Captain Marvel: Thor: Rangorak (2017), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Black Panther (2018), and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018). In other words, there are quite a few movies Carol Danvers could appear in.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that Niki Caro (McFarland, USA) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) are two women in the running to direct the movie.

Larson won Best Actress at the 2016 Oscars and Golden Globes for her role in the book-to-film adaptation of Room. She can be seen in next year’s Kong: Skull Island.

Captain Marvel was first introduced in 1968’s Marvel Super-Heroes #13. Read a detailed history about the character over at Marvel.com.
