Captain Marvel completed its first weekend in theaters, and it pulled in some amazing numbers that surpassed box office predictions.

Because Captain Marvel was the first female-led, standalone superhero movie in the MCU, expectations were incredibly high. Without even mentioning expectations from Captain Marvel comic book fans, box office expectations for the Brie Larson-headlined film were huge. Happily, after the movie’s opening weekend, it seems the flick has gone higher, further, and faster at the box office.

As Variety reports, the movie pulled in $153 million in over 4,000 theaters in North America alone (soaring past the $125 million opening weekend projections). Internationally, the film pulled in a whopping $302 million, which makes the movie the second-highest internationally grossing superhero movie behind Avengers: Infinity War. International numbers bring the film’s total opening weekend sales to a whopping $455 million.

Those numbers have earned Captain Marvel the title of sixth biggest global debut, 18th biggest domestic opening, and the biggest opening of 2019. As for its performance in the MCU, Captain Marvel had the seventh biggest opening weekend and is the second-highest grossing standalone superhero movie behind Black Panther.

It isn’t surprising to see that the two highest-grossing standalone films from the MCU are stories that brought some serious diversity to the MCU. For all of the internet trolls who spoke out against Marvel’s decision to make superhero movies that featured a predominately Black cast and the origin story of a female superhero–both characters meant to help usher in the MCU’s new phase — it seems audiences felt nothing but excitement for their inclusion in the MCU.

We’re glad to see Marvel experience success as it brings in this new era of the MCU. We can only hope that the success they’ve found with Black Panther and now Captain Marvel means that the heroes of the MCU bring more and more representation to fans of superhero movies.
