With Captain Marvel taking a trip back in time to the ’90s, we’ll be seeing the origins of several of our favorite Marvel characters. Some of them will also be meeting for the first time.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clark Gregg spoke about how his character, Agent Coulson, will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — after trading the big screen for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, following his death in The Avengers.

“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks,” Gregg told EW. “I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded!”

But perhaps for Marvel fans, the most exciting prospect of Coulson’s return to the movies will be seeing his first ever interactions with Nick Fury, which Gregg calls their “meet-cute.” Though he added that, “I don’t think [Samuel L. Jackson] will put it that way.”

Both Nick Fury and Phil Coulson will be in their infancy when it comes to S.H.I.E.L.D., before they rose in the ranks, respectively. It will be interesting to see the fledgling moments of that relationship, and how it began to evolve into the friendship the two had later in their lives.

Much like is being done with Jackson, and Fury, Gregg will also see Coulson de-aged via visual effects for the movie. However, he also had to hit the gym, in preparation to play his younger self. “When I got the call saying they wanted to do this and have Coulson be in this ‘90s world, they said, ‘Do you have a trainer?’”

Captain Marvel is set to premiere on March 8, 2019.
