The Captain Marvel sequel will tap WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell and is on the lookout for a female director.

Captain Marvel, the MCU’s first female-fronted superhero film, exceeded box office expectations last year when it grossed over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office.

With that kind of commercial success — coupled with the fact that the MCU loves its sequels and threequels — it was basically a foregone conclusion that Captain Marvel would be getting a sequel film. Still, despite the brief mention by Kevin Feige during July’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, we haven’t heard much about the second outing of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.

Until now, that is.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed today that Captain Marvel 2 is officially a go and has already tapped up-and-coming WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell to pen the script. This will be a change from the first film, which was written by Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Though there’s been nothing official from Marvel as of yet, it’s being reported that McDonnell is currently in the final stages of finalizing a deal.

According to the same report, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the writers and directors of the first Captain Marvel film, will not return to direct the sequel — though they are still in talks to stay connected to the Marvel Universe and will possibly direct a Disney+ series at a later date.

Since they won’t be returning, Marvel is reportedly looking for a female filmmaker to helm the Captain Marvel sequel, and are hoping to nab a 2022 release date for the film.

Though it’s too early in the process yet for any plot details to come to light, it does look as though the sequel film will bring its titular character out from the 1990’s where the first film took place and into the modern day.
