With Robert Downey Jr. co-starring with Chris Evans in Captain America: Civil War, it seemed like this film might lose Black Widow as a key character, but it’s now been confirmed that Scarlett Johansson will appear in the sequel.

While attending a press event in Beijing, Anthony and Joe Russo revealed that Black Widow will still play a very important role in Captain America: Civil War.

The Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors said, “We’ve been preparing for the movie since the last one debuted last year. So, we’ve been working on it for a long time now. We’re very happy how it’s coming along. Captain America 3 is gonna be called Captain America: Civil War and it’s going to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson will be back, Winter Soldier [Sebastian Stan] will be back, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will also be joining us in the next film.”

Many fans have been concerned that the film would be a bit too crowded with Robert Downey Jr. having a much bigger role than we first thought, but it seems the directors always planned on making Scarlett Johansson’s character a vital part of the third Captain America film.

While we’re a bit disappointed that Black Widow isn’t getting her own solo film any time soon, it’s exciting to hear that she’ll continue to have a major role in the Captain America storyline, as well as in this year’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

We see that Black Widow’s past will be explored in The Avengers: Age of Ultron’s new trailer, and it looks like she had to deal with some torture during her training in Russia. She also seems to have a calming effect on the Hulk, which should prove useful in The Avengers’ sequel.

Captain America: Civil War continues to look like a very exciting film, now that Tony Stark will be somewhat of an adversary for Captain America. We think that the two will get split up somehow in Age of Ultron during their battle against the murderous, human-hating Ultron, and Black Widow should be right in the middle trying to keep them together.

Scarlett Johansson seems to enjoy playing the character of Black Widow, and she has a massive following in the Marvel community. In The Avengers, Black Widow had the third most screentime of all the characters, with only Iron Man and Captain America receiving more time (by only 4 minutes) on the big screen.

She’s an exciting part of Marvel’s cinematic universe, and, more importantly, she brings her incredible acting talent to many of these superhero films, and undoubtedly lifts them up to a higher level.

Marvel is lucky to have Johansson as Black Widow, and we look forward to seeing her character continue her interesting journey next in Avengers: Age of Ultron when it hits theaters May 1, 2015.
