Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous is gearing up to hit the stage!

Producers at Columbia Live Stage officially confirmed on Tuesday (September 25) that a stage musical adaptation of Almost Famous is officially heading to Broadway.

Released in 2000, the Academy Award winning drama written and directed by Cameron Crowe tells the story of an aspiring teenage music journalist named William who’s suddenly given the chance to write a feature for Rolling Stone magazine centered around the rising rock band, Stillwater.

The film, which finds William joining the band on tour in the 1970s, is a semi-autobiographical account of Crowe’s time as a young music journalist and serves as a riveting coming-of-age dramedy as William discovers there’s so much more to the story than initially meets the eye.

With unforgettable characters, utterly quotable dialogue, and a killer soundtrack, it’s no surprise Almost Famous has withstood the test of time. And lucky for fans of the film, Crowe himself is incredibly involved with the upcoming Broadway musical adaptation.

According to Deadline, Crowe himself will be adapting the book from his own screenplay. He’ll also be working with Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next To Normal) to write music for the upcoming stage production.

Crowe actually teamed up with Peter Framption and Heart’s Nancy Wilson to write Stillwater’s songs for the film, so it’s great to hear that the musical may feature a few more original songs that weren’t part of the movie.

There’s no word yet on whether the musical will feature some some of the other iconic classic rock hits featured in the film such as Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” but if Crowe’s recent tweet is anything to go off of, it’s looking like it might.

The writer/director took to Twitter a few days ago to post a video of Kitt playing the piano before panning over to a makeshift concept board featuring a slew of notes with short scene descriptions and titles of tracks. Cat Stevens’ “The Wind” stands out particularly given that it’s one of the many songs featured on the film’s original soundtrack.

There’s no word yet on when we can expect the musical adaptation of Almost Famous to open on Broadway, but we’ll be keeping our ears peeled for more details as the project moves further into production.

Namely, we’ll be curious to see who gets cast!
