The wait is finally over! We have our first look into the origin story of everyone’s favorite sidekick/Transformer, Bumblebee.

The live-action version of Bumblebee first delighted audiences in the very first Transformers film back in 2007 as the faithful car and friend to Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky. Since then, he’s proven to be the best robot in disguise companion anyone could ever ask for.

And while we all love Bee, his earlier days on earth are a bit of a mystery to us all. In the first teaser for Bumblebee, we get a glimpse into just that. Back in 1987, before Sam, before taking on the form of a flashy Camaro, before even learning to communicate via music and radio, Bumblebee was a battle-scarred Autobot seeking refuge in a junkyard assuming the guise of an old VW Bug.

Hailee Steinfeld plays Charlie Watson, the young woman who discovers Bumblebee in the junkyard and takes him home (not knowing, of course, that her cute new fixer-upper of a car is actually a giant robot). Charlie has just turned 18 and is searching for her place in the world, just as she finds Bumblebee trying to deal with his.

The teaser shows us that it’s actually Charlie who first teaches Bee the trick of speaking through music, and tries to get him to use a Rick Astley cassette as a means of communication. However, even battle-weary Autobots don’t like being Rick Rolled, and Bee shoots the tape out into the first few notes of “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Hopefully, it doesn’t take long for Charlie to show Bee a track he enjoys to help him communicate better.

And while the teaser doesn’t focus too heavily on the threat facing humanity, we do see some cool Transformers action sequences in the trailer, so we know we’ll get to see Bumblebee fighting evil and protecting humanity. We can’t wait to see what fun adventures we’re in for when Bumblebee premieres in theaters this Christmas.
