Luke Cage is unimpressed by deadly weapons in our first clip from Marvel’s Luke Cage.

In the new clip, Harlem’s hero faces down a storm of bullets and bad guys in the confines of boxing gym. (Boxing gyms are very popular among Marvel’s Netflix-housed heroes, aren’t they?) Luke calls out a fellow named Domingo, and makes quick work of the man’s associates.

As Luke gets closer to his target, Domingo’s men draw their guns on the man with unbreakable skin — prompting Luke to remark, “I guess you guys haven’t heard about me, have you?”

Based on what the men do next, it looks like Luke is right on the money.

The rest of the new Luke Cage clip is familiar, thanks to the brief teaser scene released at the end of Daredevil season 2. But it’s still grimly hilarious to watch Luke stand impassively as the goons spray the entire gym with bullets.

Contemplating his shredded hoodie, Luke deadpans, “I’m about sick of having to buy new clothes” — and moves forward to continue his business.

This new clip displays a different side of Luke than the man we’re introduced to in the first official trailer for Luke Cage. In the trailer, the third Defender is determined to stay out of the limelight. “I just want to be left the hell alone,” he says, which makes sense after being put through the ringer in Jessica Jones.

But with personal and political pressures mounting, it looks like Luke soon decides to act as an agent of good amidst the warring interests in Harlem. “Sometimes if you want justice, you have to get it yourself,” Luke is reminded by Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple… and we’re pretty sure she knows from which she speaks.

Star Mike Colter told Hypable at San Diego Comic-Con that Luke “doesn’t want all the attention that comes with being a superhero.” But showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker adds that, as the trailer shows, Luke steps up in spite of his reservations.

“He cannot just ‘lay back and cut it,’ as he puts it,” Coker says. “He really has to accept the responsibility of heroism. And heroism’s tough.”

But hopefully, Luke is tougher.

Marvel’s Luke Cage smashes on to Netflix on Sept. 30.
