Buffy season 2 raised the stakes as Buffy returned to Sunnydale after spending the summer in Los Angeles recovering from her own death. There are plenty of monsters-of-the-week — snake guys, fish guys, zombie guys, robot guys — but more sinister new villains are introduced, especially Spike and Drusilla, the star-crossed vamp lovers who have a past with Angel. New relationships are also formed — Willow and Xander work through their weird friend-crush difficulties and find love with Oz and Cordelia.
However, Buffy’s chance at happiness with Angel comes crashing down when he loses his soul and reverts to being the psychopathic Angelus, and Giles also loses his love when Angelus kills Jenny Calendar. A new Slayer, Kendra, is called and killed, Spike decides he quite likes being alive and teams up with Buffy to stop Angel’s reign of terror, Joyce is incredibly unhelpful when faced with the truth, and in the end, Willow channels some big deal magical powers and gives Angel his soul back. Unfortunately, it’s too late, and Buffy is forced to kill him anyway, to stop the apocalypse.
This season was packed full of surprises — we learned of Giles’s dark past, Angel’s history over the centuries, Jenny’s true identity. And as usual, it’s rife with catchy quotes and cultural references. Newbies and superfans alike: how well do you remember Buffy season 2?
