One of the breakout stars of Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s stellar first season was Andre Braugher’s Captain Holt, and thanks to Dan Goor, the co-creator and co-executive producer, we have an idea of where we’ll find him in season 2.

Captain Holt may be a gay character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but thanks to the creative genius of creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur, he is no stereotype. Holt is a living, breathing human being that is gay, without it being his defining characteristic. He and his husband exist in the world of Brooklyn Nine-Nine just as any other devoted, married couple would on television.

This groundbreaking characterization made Braugher and his character stand out in the show’s first season, and now we are more anxious than ever to know what the writers have in store for him and the rest of the Nine-Nine crew.

The Backlot sat down with co-creator Dan Goor and got a bit of scoop as to where we might see Captain Holt in season 2.

It seems that we will get another glimpse of flashback Holt (which you can see above in all his glory), complete with his awesome ‘stache and full head of hair when Kyra Sedgewick guest stars in the second episode, entitled, “Dark Milk.” The title refers to a fictional hot chocolate stand in Brooklyn that is the centerpiece for Sedgewick’s and Braugher’s characters’ tumultuous history. He spills that the flashback itself was Sedgewick’s idea, and it will take the duo back 25 years.

In addition to seeing him interact with Sedgewick’s character, we will definitely be seeing more of his husband, played by Marc Evan Jackson, in Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s second season. He will be showing up in one of the season’s first episodes (which they already have in the can), but they hope to bring him back for more stories later this season. Dan gushed, “We are such huge fans of [Jackson] and of their relationship and we haven’t really yet done another major relationship story of theirs this season so we need to do that.”

We also may get a glimpse of Holt’s mother this season, but there aren’t many details on that character just yet. She is a judge, which we know since Holt always refers to her as ‘your honor’ on the phone, but Goor has one trait nailed down for her already: “I want to meet ‘your honor’ but I don’t think she’d have a problem with his sexuality.”

That’s good to hear. We love Captain Holt, and we would love to meet his proud mama bear of a mother, particularly if she brings some good dirt on our favorite fearless leader.
