Jake pushes aside his prejudice in the name of love tonight on Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2, episode 6, “Jake and Sophia.” Check out our recap!

Dating is hard for Jake (his feelings for other detectives in the Nine-Nine notwithstanding). He opens up to Terry at the bar, confiding in him how hard dating has been lately.

The date he fought so hard with Rosa to get a few weeks ago backfired, and he feels frustrated that the women he meets are boring. Down the bar they spot Sophia (Eva Longoria) and at the urging of Terry, he approaches her. They end up getting food and hitting it off, eating hot wings and drinking ranch dressing.

One thing we admire about this show is how seriously they take their jobs. Yes, Jake likes to play games and goof off, but when push comes to shove, he follows the law and doesn’t like defense attorneys, or, “sub-human garbage” as he calls them. This means that when Sophia Perez, the women he had “sexy times” with the night before walks in to replace Gary the defense attorney on the Diamond Heist case, he looks physically revolted.

Jake is only intimidated by professions that have a moral compass, not defense attorneys like Sophia. She isn’t too happy she slept with someone on the “other side” either. In the judge’s chambers, Jake thinks Sophia should recuse herself from the trial, but the defendant is okay with her continuing on the case and the judge agrees.

There isn’t The Good Wife level of professionalism in the courtroom, as Sophia winks at Jake and he tries to air-make out with the judge, the two trying to rile each other up. In the end, the jury finds the defendant not guilty, Jake’s evidence was not enough to sway them and the perp in the Diamond Heist can walk free.

Terry shows Jake that dating Sophia would not be boring like his other recent dates. Just because Jake doesn’t agree with her profession doesn’t mean they can’t have fun – right? He asks her out to a bar that has ping pong tables, and she agrees as long as they have a moratorium on talking about work.

‘Pick Amy, dummies.’

Scully is running for Union representative – again. Rosa and Amy meet with Holt to explore other options, because Scully is not equipped to speak on behalf of the union members. He only wins because he runs unopposed. Not this year! Rosa puts Amy up for running against Scully, which seems like a no-brainer to us.

Amy resists though, not wanting to jeopardize her future in the NYPD by becoming argumentative with management to get what is right for union members (think like, salary negotiations and time off). Rosa’s support and confidence in Amy – she does run her entire campaign – is reassuring though, showing a new side to their friendship.

Holt sits Amy down, breaking his vow to not get involved, and sets her straight. He explains that even if she disagrees with her superiors, as union reps are known to do, she can still rise to the level of captaincy that she hopes to be someday. Holt isn’t grooming her, per se, but he is watching her, guiding her, and it’s nice to see this mentor/mentee relationship slowly develop.

Don’t try to outsmart the other person.

Boyle and Gina had a long, and serious, enough relationship to keep odds and ends at each other’s places. They end up fighting over the non-refundable luxury sex weekend they had planned before they broke up. Both send emails to each other pretending to be life-changing opportunities to meet with a local food-blogger and Beyonce’s momager, Tina Knowles and try to trick one another into giving up the room. Holt, fed up with this, assigns them both overnight shifts, forcing Boyle and Gina to give up their keys to his dad and her mom, unbeknownst to the other party.
