Eva Longoria, Kyra Sedgwick, and Chris Parnell guest star, causing all sorts of trouble tonight on Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2, episode 14 “The Defense Rests.”

You can’t charm the robots.

Public defenders see the cops as the enemy, and Jake and Terry physically recoil when they even mention the opposing side. It puts Sophia in a precarious position, albeit a frustrating one because she no longer gets the ‘good’ cases.

Thus, when Jake and Terry appear at a party for Sophia’s work, they are surrounded by people who love to hate them. Sophia tries to explain to Jake that he has entered the swarm. When talking to her, he briefly mentions something that he loves as much as he loves her. She, blessedly, agrees to blow right past this remark, but Jake knows it’s out there in the world now. Will this come back to haunt him? Kind of.

Fellow SNL alum, Chris Parnell, guest stars as Sophia’s boss, Geoffrey Hoytsman. Determined to get him to like him during the party, Jake uncovers a few of Hoytsman’s hobbies. One of them? Gambling. The two get into a bidding war.

Hoytsman bets Jake $60 that he can’t grab one glass without knocking the entire tower of champagne flutes over (he cannot). Another bet involves guessing how tall Terry is — in egg rolls.

Jake then follows him into the bathroom and finds him doing lines of cocaine, and Detective Peralta makes an appearance. The evening concludes with Hoytsman being led out of the party in handcuffs by Jake. To his credit, Jake does admit to Sophia that he never should have crashed the party.

“The Defense Rests” is Eva Longoria’s last appearance on the show (for now), and with that, Sophia and Jake’s relationship is dunzo. They dated for four months, and Sophia concludes that their jobs and lives are simply incompatible. We think their parting is for the best. This leaves room for Brooklyn Nine-Nine to explore other storylines.

Butt plays mind games with Holt.

Kyra Sedgwick’s Deputy Chief Wuntch reappears tonight, coming to ask Holt to put in a good word for her for a potential move to the Boston Chief of Police.

Holt goes to Rosa looking for advice about what to tell the Boston Police Commissioner. He could torpedo Wuntch’s possible promotion, thus ensuring she stays in New York City, or he could play nice, let her get the job, and she will be out of his hair forever. In the end, he takes the high road, but he does rub it in her nose that she will be moving to a “second-class city.”

This plot line takes a very weird turn when Holt presents Wuntch with Wicked: On Tour tickets, and she laughs in his face. She used the Boston job as leverage to get a promotion in the NYPD, so she’s sticking around after all.

It’s a Peralta move, but while in her office, Holt changes the autocorrect on her computer, making Wuntch autocorrect to ‘butt.’

Gina, Boyle, Amy, and conflict resolution.

Gina’s mom and Boyle’s dad — you’ll remember they started hooking up a few months ago when Boyle and Gina called their fling off — seem to be heading down the aisle. But first, Boyle’s father wants Gina’s approval. She resists, to the point where Amy strives to hold a conflict mediation session with Gina and Boyle, but eventually agrees to listen to reason.

Really, Gina is worried about her mom getting hurt again, but she agrees to talk to her potential step-father, to prove he is different than all the rest. Boyle’s father is enamored with Gina’s mom, doting on her while facing Gina’s inquisition. If he does hurt her mom, Gina will cut off Boyle’s genitals.
