This year marks the 20th anniversary of Don Bluth’s beloved animated classic Anastasia, and the current Broadway production of the musical didn’t let the milestone go unnoticed!

Broadway’s Anastasia came up with a very fitting way to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the animated film, which originally hit theaters in 1997.

After Wednesday’s matinee performance, actress Christy Altomare (who plays Anya/Anastasia in the Broadway production) was on hand to deliver a very special performance of “Journey to the Past.”

After the show ended, Altomare took the stage once more for a repeat performance of the song. This time, however, the actress was accompanied by a a big screen which played the “Journey to the Past” sequence from the animated film as Altomare sang along with it on stage.

It’s clear those in attendance weren’t expecting the surprise tribute. There’s a moment just as the curtain rises to reveal the screen projecting the animated film where there’s an audible “aww” emitted from those in attendance.

Watch Christy Altomare perform “Journey to the Past” along with the original animated version of Anastasia below!

EW reports that both Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who wrote the Oscar nominated track for the film, were on hand for the fun 20th anniversary tribute.

We’re sure Flaherty and Ahrens’ attendance made the moment all the more special both for Altomare, and for the rest of Anastasia’s Broadway cast!

Directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, Anastasia first premiered on November 21, 1997 and features a star-studded cast which includes Meg Ryan (Anastasia), John Cusack (Dimitri), Kelsey Grammar (Vladimir), Christopher Lloyd (Rasputin), Hank Azaria (Bartok), Bernadette Peters (Sophie), Kristen Dunst (young Anastasia), and Angela Lansbury (The Dowager Empress Marie).
