Broadchurch took audiences in both the U.K. and U.S.A. by storm last year. With season 2 on the horizon, here’s why you can’t miss it.

Broachchurch wrapped its successful second season in the U.K. last month (don’t go Googling if you don’t want spoilers). Upon its conclusion, it was announced the show has been greenlit for a third season. So, anyone who was wondering if the show could keep up its first season momentum, the answer is “yes.”

According to BBC America, season two picks up just in time for the trial of Joe Miller. They state that “the second season of Broadchurch follows two seemingly unconnected events: the trial of Joe Miller (the man charged for Danny’s murder) and the Sandbrook case – Detective Inspector Alec Hardy’s previously failed investigation, which has dogged his existence ever since. Though all expect a swift sentencing, there are still undeniable discrepancies and more secrets hidden among the townspeople. At the same time, Hardy’s past comes back to haunt him when his primary suspect in the Sandbrook homicide resurfaces, looking for the woman who testified against him. What unfolds is a series of twists and turns as the Sandbrook case bursts back open, unraveling Hardy’s past and bringing shocking truths from both cases to the surface.”

Now as intriguing as all of that is, here are the top 5 reasons why you really can’t miss season 2:

1. David Tennant and Olivia Coleman

Both David Tennant and Olivia Coleman will be reprising their roles as DI Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller. The two of them had wonderful chemistry last season where they were alternately at each others throats while finding a mutual respect for their unique skills. They are going to need to rely on each other as season 2 features the trial of Ellie’s husband Joe, and a new investigation into Hardy’s botched Sandbrook homicide case. In the aftermath of last season, neither of them is about to win any popularity contests. They will have to stick together to survive the onslaught of the trial.

2. Meet the legal teams

Heading the crown prosecution of Joe Miller is Jocelyn Knight, played by veteran U.K. actress Charlotte Rampling. Her adversary leading up the defense is Academy Award nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste. It will be a battle of words, emotional manipulation, and more as neither one wants to lose the case.

3. New cast of familiar faces

Two fan favorites of other series will be playing major roles in Broadchurch: Eve Myles as Claire Ripley and James D’Arcy as Lee Ashworth. Both Riply and Ashworth are connected to Hardy’s previous case, and perhaps to the current one. Viewers will most likely remember Eve Myles from her days on Torchwood as Gwen Cooper. James D’Arcy just wrapped his first season playing the ever unflappable Edwin Jarvis on Agent Carter.

4. Will he get away with it?

Last season it was pretty certain that Joe Miller was the one responsible for killing Danny Latimer. Joe confessed to the crime when he realized that Hardy was closing in on him. The only thing is, he’s now decided to plead not guilty (see video below). How will this plea affect his family and the Lattimer family? More importantly, will his legal team get a self-admitted murderer acquitted?

5. More than just a police procedural

Where Broadchurch really broke new ground last season was in its even focus. It wasn’t just about Hardy and Miller following an evidence trail. We got to see into the lives of various member of the Broadchurch community, whose lives impacted and were impacted by the case. In the end, the story was not about a town torn apart by a murder trial, but rather how the individual lives of the residents were affected, and how they relied upon or betrayed each other.

Broadchurch airs tomorrow on BBC America, March 4 at 10:00pm ET.
