Speaking today at the Television Critics Association’s winter press event, Fox revealed that their U.S. adaptation of Broadchurch will have a different ending.

As casting decisions have been announced over the past few months, one lingering problem has continued to float in the background: Will Gracepoint have the same ending as Broadchurch, the show it’s based on?

The answer finally comes today from Fox entertainment head Kevin Reilly: No. In fact, the show will have a different killer and an added twist. “We have a different ending than they have, so there will be something to stay tuned for with a twist,” he told the media Monday morning.

Reilly also revealed that Fox had considered airing Broadchurch’s eight episode first season but then decided to make their own version. “We really did contemplate it, but I think it would probably be lower-rated, where we could have a really big win with this,” he said.

He added that Gracepoint will still stay close to the original. “I’ve learned the hard way: don’t fix what ain’t broke,” he said.

The comments sound similar to those made by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall, who wrote episode 1 of Gracepoint and will serve as executive producer. “I think there’s a really great opportunity to make something that is hopefully as good if not better than the British version,” he said in September. “I’m very, very fascinated to see this story in a different landscape with an acting ensemble that’s just as strong but taken from really great American actors.”

Gracepoint boasts a stellar cast including David Tennant who starred in Broadchurch on BBC/BBC America last year. Rounding out the cast is Anna Gunn as Detective Ellie Miller, Jacki Weaver who will play Susan Wright, and Michael Peña who will play Mark Lasseter.

Meanwhile, Broadchurch season 2 is in the works.
