David Tennant starred in the ITV series Broadchurch earlier this year which just wrapped its run on BBC America in the U.S., and today we’re learning he will reprise his role for the U.S. adaptation on Fox.

The announcement can only be considered a very strange move and one of very few times in television history where one actor plays the same character in two adaptations of a show.

Tennant (who’s Scottish) will play an American detective, and what’s even more interesting is that the original Broadchurch creator recently spoke highly of the U.S. adaptation because it will be made up of an American cast. “I think there’s a really great opportunity to make something that is hopefully as good if not better than the British version,” said creator Chris Chibnall.

“I’m very, very fascinated to see this story in a different landscape with an acting ensemble that’s just as strong but taken from really great American actors,” he said. “The DNA of the original is absolutely intact and filtered through a new prism, so it should still feel just as vibrant, and interesting, and strange, and unique, and beautiful, but just in a different setting.”

Fox’s adaptation of Broadchurch is part of slate of limited series airing in the next couple of years. Their two other limited-run shows announced so far are 24: Live Another Day and M. Night Shyamalan’s Wayward Pines.

Meanwhile, the BBC is currently at work on Broadchurch series 2 in the United Kingdom.

Thanks, Variety.
