Ghostbusters 3 may not be in the works, but according to new reports that surfaced on Sunday, director Paul Feig is currently in talks to direct a new Ghostbusters flick which would reboot the series.

According to Variety, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is currently in talks to direct a reboot of the poplar Ghostbusters franchise, but fans of the original films shouldn’t expect to see any of the original actors reprising their roles in the potential film. Instead, Feig’s proposed upcoming film would reboot the whole series in a big way.

The twist? The rumored reboot would gender bend the characters by casting women in the main roles as the ghost hunting heroes. If the rumored reboot were to happen, the script would also be written completely from scratch.

Fans of the original live action Ghostbusters films were left wanting after original director Ivan Reitman dropped out of the running to take on the long anticipated follow up to the original film and its sequel.

But while Reitman may not be interested in directing Ghostbusters 3, which presumably would have continued the franchise, perhaps Feig’s rumored reboot is the best way to go, especially if the remaining living actors from the original Ghostbusters movies aren’t interested in coming back to reprise their roles.
