Greg Berlanti’s Titans series has officially found its leading man in Brenton Thwaites

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Comics and Greg Berlanti have officially tapped Brenton Thwaites to play Dick Grayson in the upcoming Titans series.

The new superhero drama is set to follow a group of youngsters destined to be superheroes. Lead by Dick Grayson (Thwaites), who is probably better known to Batman fans as the caped crusader’s sidekick, Robin.

Titans is set to take place after Dick leaves Batman’s side in an effort to find himself. It’s then that he joins the ranks of the Titans and serves as a mentor to the likes of Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft) and more.

Thwaites may be fairly new to television, but the Australian actor is no stranger to the silver screen. The actor’s past credits include Disney’s retelling of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, as well as the big screen adaptation of Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver.

Most recently, Thwaites starred opposite Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales, where he played the son of Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Kiera Knightley) Turner.

In a statement announcing Thwaites’ involvement on the upcoming project, executive producer Geoff Johns recounted how hard it was to find the perfect Dick Grayson.

“Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in the DC Universe, and it wasn’t easy to find him but we have,” said Johns in a statement. “Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger, and physical presence of Batman’s former protege and the Titans’ future leader. We’re extremely lucky he’s chosen to bring his talents to this project and this character.”

The upcoming live action series has been given a straight-to-series order and is set to debut on a DC Comics digital platform sometime in 2018.
