A Breaking Bad spin off is reportedly in the works and will feature lawyer Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk) in the lead role.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and the show’s writer-producer Peter Gould are working on the spin off, and the latter writer created the character of Saul.

Deadline broke the story and says that since the character is the comic relief on the show, the Breaking Bad spin off “is eyed as a comedy, which could be one-hour, but a half-hour format also is being explored.”

Given how dark Breaking Bad is, we’re having a hard time seeing a spin off fitting squarely in the comedy genre. The show’s audience has grown accustomed to seeing Saul working in the dramatic environment, and removing him too far out of that zone could be alienating. On the other hand, we can only imagine some of the clients that Saul has to deal with in Albuquerque, and as such some of the cases he has to handle could be funny.

Furthermore, we trust Gilligan’s judgement and don’t think he’d create a cheesy product for the sake of keeping the Breaking Bad franchise alive.

Is a Breaking Bad spin off a good idea? Or do you never want to be in any of the characters’ worlds again following the series finale this summer?

Breaking Bad season 6 (otherwise known as the other half of season 5) premieres Sunday, July 14 on AMC.
