The Breaking Bad spinoff following colorful lawyer Saul Goodman, tentatively titled Better Call Saul, is officially in development at AMC.

The show’s first episode is a one-hour prequel to Breaking Bad, which will “focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character [played by Bob Odenkirk] before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer,” according to a statement.

Though a deal for a full season has not been set in stone yet, AMC and Sony will likely approve a full-fledged run after deals are ironed out.

Interestingly, Netflix and other channels attempted to nab the Breaking Bad spinoff series in light of AMC’s huge success with the original show, which is currently wrapping up its final season.

AMC will need this new show as they move into a new era of programming. With Breaking Bad at its end and Mad Men set to close its doors in 2014, its only remaining hit show will be The Walking Dead, which shows no signs of ending.

Odenkirk and series creator Vince Gilligan have spoke at length about the Breaking Bad spinoff over the past year. The two have been very excited about the idea and were looking forward to making it a reality.

Do you think this Breaking Bad spinoff featuring Saul Goodman can be another hit for AMC? We can’t wait to see what they’ve dreamed up for Saul to deal with.

Saul has had some excellent lines in these final eight episodes as he actively helps Walter White avoid his DEA brother-in-law Hank.
