Longtime viewers of AMC’s Breaking Bad may recall that series creator Vince Gilligan helmed and wrote the very first episode of his show.

We’re learning today that Gilligan will do the same thing for the series finale, due out this summer.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this past Monday, Gilligan said that he would be writing the final episode of Breaking Bad season 6 himself.

Then last night at an event in Beverley Hills, Gilligan confirmed that he would not only write, but also direct it. “I’m going to write the very last episode. It’s the only one I’ll have written with these final eight, so I’m hoping I have enough time to write it,” said Gilligan to THR.

The cast and crew are currently shooting the final episodes in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Episode six’s script was recently completed, and he confirmed that episode seven’s is being written this week. There will only be eight episodes in this sixth season (or fifth season depending on how you look at the situation).

Gilligan spoke about what it’s like to be nearing its end. “I’m sad, it’s a very bittersweet thing. I’m very sad about it being over,” he said. “There’s always going to be somebody who says they wished it went a different way. But if it ends well, if it ends right. …Hopefully we’re going to please the bulk of our viewers with this ending. We’re going to leave it all on the field, I can tell you that.”

Thanks, Hollywood Reporter.
